The Scoop: The day I became the Kelly McGillis (Top Gun, anyone?) of strategic decision-making

Reader,

Imagine... 22-year-old me, fresh out of college, standing in the front of a room full of US Air Force warfighters, with my blonde curls, a navy suit, and high heels that clicked way louder than my confidence felt.

There I was, the youngest person in the room by at least a decade, responsible for guiding actual warfighters who had seen more in a single deployment than I had in my entire life, through high-stakes conversations about the future of national security.

It was my very first job out of college, and I felt like freaking Kelly McGills in Top Gun!

While my friends were learning office etiquette and figuring out how to work the fax machine (yep! That's how old I am), I was facilitating strategic decision-making workshops for the military.

We're talking real strategy sessions where the questions were things like:

  • What emerging threats are coming?
  • Are our servicemen and women prepared?
  • Where are the capability gaps, and what will it cost us if we ignore them?
  • What must we prioritize now and in the future to protect the mission?

The conversations were heated, the stakes even higher, and the personalities were… PERSONALITIES.

It was the most intense crash course in leadership, facilitation, and strategic clarity I could’ve ever asked for.

That time in my career taught me something I’ve carried into every boardroom, every workshop, every executive retreat, and now, every founder session I lead:

Strategy isn’t a document. It’s a discipline.

It’s not the glossy plan we create at the end or beginning of the year.

It's not the goals on a whiteboard or a pretty vision board we make over a glass of wine.

It’s not the word-of-the-year or the color-coded planner we buy for a steal on Black Friday.

Strategy is the courage to face where you actually are… and the clarity to decide what comes next.

That’s what we were doing in those military conference rooms, and it’s exactly what I’m doing now with high-achieving female founders navigating the friction of success and their next level of growth.

While the stakes look different today... business models instead of battle plans... the questions are eerily similar:

  • Are you ready for the future you say you want?
  • Do you have the clarity, capacity, and alignment to support your next level?
  • What gaps are quietly slowing you down?
  • What will it cost if you don’t evolve?

In today's blog + podcast episode, I walk you through this shift in detail and break down the strategic readiness framework, The S.T.R.A.T.E.G.Y. Method, I still use today.

If you’ve ever felt the friction of growth, been standing at the edge of a new season, or your business is successful on the outside but misaligned on the inside…

You’ll want to read (or listen to) this one.

And Reader, if reading this has you thinking, “Yep... something in my business needs to shift,” then trust that.

Every powerful evolution begins with a moment of clarity, a moment where you zoom out, take an honest inventory, and finally name what needs to change.

If you want a thought partner in that process, someone who can help you see the full picture, make sense of the friction, and translate it into strategy, I’d love to support you.

I opened a few Strategic Power Hour spots before the year ends. If it feels like your moment, grab one and we’ll dig in together.
