I'm currently in Steamboat Springs, CO celebrating my inlaws' 50th wedding anniversary.
50 years!
In today's world, that feels like a whole lifetime, and I guess it is.
But it's got me thinking about commitment and how we navigate the ups and downs of life and business.
If you've been at this for a while, you know that running a business, like relationships, take a lot of work and commitment. There are moments where it's easy, where everything feels like it's clicked into place and it's smooth going.
And then there are moments where things feel extraordinarily hard, where nothing seems to be working, your communication (aka marketing) is floating around in the ether, and growth feels like wading through the dreaded quicksand pit (IYKYK).
I know a lot of business owners are in this space right now. The things that used to work, aren't, the messaging that used to land is missing the mark, and offers you have used forever feel like drudgery.
Sometimes it's the mechanics, but based on what I'm seeing and the conversations I'm having, the problems are much deeper, more foundational, than that.
We're wrestling with big, hard questions like:
Should I keep going?
Is it time to let this go?
What would it look like to really do this differently (aka how I really want)?
Maybe if I push harder, things will get back on track?
Why is this so hard?
When you're deeply committed to your business, these questions feel especially hard and painful... and even worse, like failure.
But to me, it's part of the natural process of growing as a founder and leader.
The longer you're at it, the more you evolve... and so does your business, and this is especially true when the world around us is shifting dramatically.
If you're trying to sort through answers to these questions, alone at 2am, you're not alone.
And perhaps even better, you don't have to figure it out alone.
The symptoms you're feeling, like marketing that doesn't land the way it used to, slower sales, and even the tension-y way you're feeling about your own business isn't a sign that you're not committed.
It's also not a sign that you need to quit or keep grinding it out. The answers are rarely binary like that.
